Weather is the main factor slowing progress of new county fire stations in Districts 1 and 2.
Once the new facilities are in place, they’ll add up to four new fire houses in Lowndes County. New stations have recently been built in Artesia and New Hope, county supervisor and board president Harry Sanders said Thursday during a Columbus Exchange Club meeting.
After the meeting, Sanders said weather is the only factor in erecting a new facility in District 2 on Hwy. 45 near Antioch Baptist Church. The metal building bought to replace the old one is already at the district’s road department barn.
“They’re just waiting on good weather to be able to pour the concrete for the floor, and then they’re going to put up the building,” Sanders said.
Site work is ongoing in Caledonia, where a 5-acre parcel has been purchased recently by the District 1 Fire Department to relocate its main fire station to a location with lighter traffic and more training space.
District 2 has two other fire stations, one on Caledonia-Kolola Springs Road and another near the intersection of Wolf Road and Dummy Line Road.
District 1 has three other stations, one on Lone Oak Drive, one on Border Springs Road and another on Steens Vernon Road.
County fire services coordinator Sammy Fondren, District 1 Fire Chief Mike Spears and District 2 Chief Andy Perkins could not be reached for more information as of press time.
