SOUTHAVEN — The Columbus High School football team dropped its second close decision in a row Friday in a 14-6 loss to Southaven in a Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A, Region 1 game.
The loss came a week after the Falcons lost a 6-0 lead in a 10-6 setback to Tupelo in their region opener.
“We”ve been in every ballgame we”ve played,” Columbus coach Bubba Davis said. “We led a lot of them at halftime. We just haven”t been able to score enough points and keep them out enough to balance it out so we could win a game. But we”re playing hard. All of us are sort of disgusted of the outcomes, but we have to keep working and doing what we”re doing and find a way to make a play that will make a difference in the ballgame.”
The loss was the fifth in a row for Columbus (1-5, 0-2 region) after beating Aberdeen 27-26 in two overtimes in the season opener.
Columbus avoided a shutout in the fourth quarter when Cedric Jackson scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak.
The Falcons got to the Southaven 2 later in the fourth, but had a pass intercepted.
“We”re still playing a lot of young kids,” Davis said. “It”s a learning experience for them. We”re proud of our kids. We”ve lost five straight now, but every Friday night they”re out there on the field getting after it.”
Columbus will play host to South Panola at 7 p.m. Friday.
