Immanuel Christian School has a new name.
The private school will now be known as Columbus Christian Academy. The name was revealed in front of students, faculty and parents Tuesday morning.
The school separated from Immanuel Baptist Church last month. As part of the separation agreement, the church asked the school to change the name. Students submitted their choices for the name and board members made ultimate decision. The school colors and mascot will remain the same. While the current senior class will graduate from Immanuel Christian School, legal paperwork has already been filed to change the name, according to school board member Bill Thomas.
Thomas said the new name was an obvious choice.
"It was the most popular vote between the parents and the kids and everybody," Thomas said. "It seemed like that was the name. We are in Columbus. We're a Christian academy. Academy means higher education and that's just what we're about. That's what we do."
The school will host an Open House tonight from 5- 7 p.m. so the community can tour the facility and learn about the changes that are occurring, Thomas said.
