Count the Columbus office of the Social Security Administration among those affected by the April 28 tornado that tore through Lowndes County.
The local office, located at 3577 Bluecutt Road, suffered extensive flooding damage during the storm. The Social Security Administration announced last week that the offices will be closed for approximately 45 days while undergoing repairs.
The office averages 500 visits each week, according to Patti Patterson, regional communications director for the Social Security Administration.
Officials encourage anyone who normally uses the local office to conduct business online (socialsecurity.gov) or visit offices in Starkville, at 1089C Stark Road; Tuscaloosa, at 2005 University Blvd.; or Tupelo, at 199 Saddle Creek Dr.
Acknowledging that many of those who need to access Social Security may have difficulty traveling to other officers or may not have access to the Internet, officials point out that most business can be done over the phone. Non-urgent business can be conducted by mail, she said.
“Most of the business does not require a visit to the office, so we encourage anyone who needs help to call, visit us online or visit another office,” said Patti Patterson, Regional Communications Director for the Social Security Administration.
Patterson said the 21 Columbus employees who work in the Columbus office will work at other locations while repairs are made. Those employees will be directed to handle calls from Columbus residents. The phone number is 877-626-9914.
