To celebrate Memorial Day, a local group of veteran supporters have organized a Walk/Run at the Columbus Riverwalk.
The Richard E. Holmes II Memorial Foundation is hosting the second annual Veterans Memorial Walk/Run to benefit veterans in Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Clay and Noxubee County.
On-site registration for the event begins at 1 p.m. Saturday. The walk/run begins at 2 p.m. The cost is $15.
In a press release issued for the event, organizers said they wanted to help local veterans adjust to civilian life after their time spent on active duty.
Judie Granderson Holmes founded the Richard E. Holmes II Memorial Foundation after her son, Richard E. Holmes II, died from an overdose when he was 28 years old. Holmes was a war veteran who struggled with addiction. His family believes that if more resources had been available for veterans, Holmes may have survived. In his honor, they established the foundation and the walk/run.
All proceeds from Saturday’s event will go to help veterans in the community.
On Monday at 11 a.m., a Memorial Day Service will be held at the Oktibbeha County Courthouse. The ceremony is hosted by the Starkville Military Affairs Committee. A civilian flyover will take place. The guest speaker will be Dr. Gordon Hazard of West Point. Hazard is a World War II veteran.
