Have you noticed a building on Hospital Drive in Columbus undergoing renovations? Here’s the low down: An eye doctor is opening shop there.
Golden Triangle Family Eye Care’s first day of business will be June 16.
Dr. Nicholas Richardson, a Hamilton native and graduate of Indiana University School of Optometry, began renovating the building at 428 Hospital Drive in early April. The building, which Richardson owns, is roughly 3,600 square feet. Only 2,600 square feet will be utilized for patient care.
Richardson will be the sole care provider at the clinic, at least initially. The facility will employ three people and be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
There will be a ribbon cutting on June 13.
In March, near the intersection of Yorkville Road and Highway 69, BBD’s House of Goodies opened its doors.
The restaurant is owned and operated by Tina Cotton Johnson, a West Point native who has lived in Columbus for about 15 years. Every day of the week she has plate lunches (one meat, two vegetables, a drink) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as a menu you can choose from with catfish (sandwich or plate), pork chops, chicken wings, cheeseburgers and other items on it.
On Thursdays and Fridays the menu includes chitlins. They are one of the biggest sellers, Johnson said. The restaurant typically sells 70 pounds worth each week.
BBD’s House of Goodies is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
A barbecue joint Golden Triangle residents will recognize has opened a second location.
Pop’s BBQ served its first customer in Caledonia on Wednesday. The new restaurant is located at 9631 Wolfe Road in the spot that once housed the Homerun Grill.
Pop’s BBQ has been at 6767 Highway 45 N. near Columbus for years. That is not changing. But Morris Langley, the manager, said Caledonia has always supported the barbecue restaurant and people often asked if he would consider opening up a location there. So he did.
The new location will offer the same items the original location does, plus plate lunches on Monday through Friday. They’ve got pulled pork, brisket and ribs, and a salad bar. You can eat it there or take it home.
The number for the Caledonia spot is 662-436-9391. It is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday. On Sundays, a lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Lastly, for beer drinkers: Kona Brewing Company, a Hawaii-based brewery that calls what it makes “liquid aloha,” began distributing its beer to the Golden Triangle last month. Mississippi is the 40th state in the country to have Kona brews.
Looking at Columbus, Zachary’s on 5th Street North and Buffalo Wild Wings on Highway 45 North offer Kona beer. Zachary’s has got Longboard Island Lager on tap. So does Buffalo Wild Wings, and they also have Big Wave Golden Ale.
In Starkville, seven establishments are selling the beer, according to the brewery’s corporate website at konabrewingco.com.
The company turned 20 years old this year and says it is the fastest growing craft brewer in the United States.
