STARKVILLE — An extremely hectic summer for Starkville High School quarterback Brady Davis included a big announcement this week.
Davis, a 6-foot-4 senior this fall, verbally committed to play his senior college ball at the University of Memphis.
“My dad is from Memphis and I still have a lot of family up there,” Davis said. “Memphis has always been kind of like a hometown school for me.
“I’m looking forward to being a part of the program when they get it turned around.”
Justin Fuente is entering his third season as head coach at Memphis. With his pedigree being on the offensive side of the ball, Fuente has been brought in to revitalize the Tigers’ offense.
This past season, Memphis finished 3-9 overall and 1-7 in league play in its inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference.
“(Coach Fuente) has been the one head coach who has really been actively involved in the recruiting process and that impressed me,” Davis said. “After spending some time with him and some of the other coaches, I felt like this was a the right time to make this decision.”
Last season, Davis played at New Hope High School. During his junior year with the Trojans, Davis threw for 2,626 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Now, he joins a Starkville program, which lost in the opening round of the MHSAA Class 6A playoffs last season after winning the 6A title in 2012.
“We have some really high expectations for Brady,” Starkville coach Jamie Mitchell said. “He has fit in already and has a chance to become a really special player.”
