Nucor dedicates men of steel

STARKVILLE -- The Nucor steel plant in Starkville Friday morning dedicated the fruits of a project designed to keep its employees working. 


Nucor, which has been in Starkville since it purchased Gulf States Manufacturers in 2007, specializes in making steel buildings for companies looking to grow their business. But demand has decreased during the downturn. 


So instead of laying off employees, Nucor 6 1/2-foot steel cutouts of minutemen for armories throughout Mississippi. 


According to Nucor President Danny Coggins, the project has kept the company''s 168 employees on the clock during slow economic times, when Nucor business has seen has much as a 50-percent decrease. 


Aubrey Ray, of the Department of Defense''s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, presented Nucor Steel with a plaque for making the steel minutemen.
