Approximately 400 college students — from seniors to freshmen — will move to Columbus on Saturday during student move-in day at Mississippi University for Women.
The university’s freshman population is booming, with students this year taking up two dorms as opposed to the usual one, according to Sirena Cantrell, MUW’s Dean of Students and Director of Housing and Residence Life.
Freshman typically reside in Kincannon Hall. The dorm underwent a facelift this summer — new paint, new blinds, basic upgrades — and there has been a buzz around campus as students prepare to move in. Because of the influx of students, first-year students will also be living in Jones Hall, according to Cantrell.
The university has six dorm halls total.
“I think the students are excited to be coming in,” Cantrell said. “We’ve been making a lot of enhancements to the residence halls this summer and I think the returners are excited to come back and see the new look.”
For freshman leaving home for the first time, Cantrell recommends bringing familiar items that remind them of home and communicating with new roommates. For parents and volunteers helping the students move, Cantrell said don’t be afraid to ask questions. Many MUW offices will be open throughout Saturday to make move-in smoother.
“Don’t be afraid to ask,” Cantrell said. “That’s what our staff are there for.”
Move-in begins at noon Saturday. Volunteers interested in helping can contact Cantrell at 662-329-7127.
