Main Street Columbus has been selected as a semifinalist for the Great American Main Street Awards, an award presented through the National Trust of Historic Preservation.
Main Street Columbus Inc. Director Amber Murphree Brislin said Columbus is one of 10 cities nationwide to be selected as a semifinalist, and will move on to the final round for consideration.
“We were the only city in Mississippi to be on the list, and one of three from the South to be chosen. We are thrilled to one of the 10 cities selected,” she said.
The others cities selected as semifinalists include Aledo, Ill., Fairmont, W. Va., Farmland, Ind., Fort Pierce, Fla., Lee”s Summit, Mo., Paducah, Ky., Pontiac, Ill., and Rochester, Mich.
Brislin said Main Street submitted an application to the National Main Street organization detailing Columbus” history, the accomplishments of Main Street Columbus, development of small businesses and other items.
“We have to submit another application to be considered for the finalist award. There is still a lot of work to be done,” she said.
If chosen as one of the five winners, Main Street Columbus will be honored May 4 during the National Main Streets Conference in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The National Trust Main Street Center”s annual GAMSA winners are recognized for their accomplishments in revitalizing the nation”s historic and traditional Main Street commercial districts.
