Law enforcement officials hope to have a slow New Year”s weekend, similar to the Christmas holiday weekend.
Columbus police stayed busy on the roads during the holiday weekend while neighboring communities stayed quiet.
Some agencies will conduct roadblocks on New Year”s Eve and throughout the weekend to check on drivers.
The Starkville Police Department will have checkpoints in place around the city, said SPD Capt. John Thomas.
Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Department also plans to have checkpoints around the county, weather permitting, said Deputy Clark Bryan.
Clay County Chief Deputy Eddie Scott said Clay County sheriff”s deputies will set up roadblocks this weekend, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol is planning multiple safety checkpoints around the New Year”s holiday.
Christmas traffic
Columbus Police Department officers responded to 12 accidents, issued 57 citations and made one DUI arrest over the Christmas weekend. No injuries or fatalities were reported from the wrecks.
Starkville and West Point police had an easier time. Starkville police responded to two accidents with no injuries and no DUIs. West Point had no wrecks or DUIs.
The Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Office attended three wrecks with no injuries and no DUIs.
The Clay County Sheriff”s Office worked four wrecks with no serious injuries and no DUIs.
