WEST POINT -- A West Point man remains uncharged in the shooting death of a Clay County man.

Jeremy Barnhill, 24, of West Point, maintains he shot Curtis Clardy, 46, of 812 Jack Williams Road in Cedar Bluff, in self-defense on the night of Jan. 2. Clardy later died from two gunshot wounds to his abdomen and side.

Clardy reportedly was involved in a romantic relationship with Barnhill''s sister. Barnhill came to Jack Williams Road to get his sister from Clard''s house when a confrontation occurred, and Clardy was shot down in the street near his home. Barnhill told the Clay County Sheriff''s Department Clardy threatened him with a knife.

Investigators are reviewing testimony from Barnhill and another male witness who was with Clardy at the time of the shooting.

They have contacted the district attorney''s office for advisement on proceeding with charges in light of Barnhill''s claim of self-defense.

Clardy''s funeral was held Wednesday.
