Nelson, Murrah too much for Columbus boys

JACKSON -- The Columbus High School boys basketball team couldn''t find a way to stop Dundrecous Nelson. 

 

Nelson, a University of Mississippi signee and member of The Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen team, poured in a game-high 37 points Tuesday to lead Murrah to a 70-58 victory in the opening round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A North State Tournament. 

 

Nelson had the hot hand from the outside, making six 3-pointers. 

 

Columbus battled to a 28-28 halftime tie before being outscored 18-6 in the third quarter. Both teams scored 24 points in the final period. 

 

Columbus, which finished the season 13-13, was led by Bobby Wrench with 19 points and seven rebounds, Deontae Jones with 17 points and four rebounds, and Akeem Toppin with eight points. 

 

Jerrial Dawson also had 16 points for Murrah. 

 

n Noxubee County 82, Shannon 65: At Macon, Vincent Sanders and Daquarius Mallard each had 22 points Tuesday to lead the Tigers (17-10) in the opening round of the MHSAA Class 4A North Half State Tournament. 

 

With the victory, Noxubee County advances to play Center Hill at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Pontotoc High. 

 

"We started out too slow," Noxubee County coach T.J. Billups said. "As a team we didn''t play with any urgency or any effort defensively." 

 

Billups said the spark didn''t come for his team until the third quarter. He said his players realized that just because Shannon was a No. 4 seed and that they were playing at home didn''t mean they were guaranteed a victory. 

 

After leading by four points at halftime, the Tigers used a 19-point third quarter and a 29-point fourth quarter to pull away. 

 

Myquell Grace added 17 points for the Tigers. 

 

n Pickens County 71, Reeltown 63: At Montgomery, Ala., the Tornadoes rallied in the second half in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 2A Central Regional Tournament. 

 

Pickens County outscored Reeltown 43-30 in the second half after trailing 33-28 at halftime. 

 

Pickens County (24-2), which won its sixth game in a row, was led by Deion Curry with 18 points, LaJuan Doss and Markeithon Hall with 14 each, and Nick Stewart with 13. 

 

The Tornadoes will play in the championship game of the regional at 8 p.m. Thursday against Lanett, which beat R.C. Hatch 61-59 on Tuesday. 

 

n In other games Tuesday, Thrasher eliminated West Oktibbeha from the Class 1A North Half State Tournament with a 56-53 victory. 

 

In the Class 1A South Half State Tournament, East Oktibbeha advanced with a 101-51 victory against Sacred Heart. 

 

In the Class 2A North Half State Tournament, West Bolivar eliminated East Webster 55-35. 

 

Girls 

 

n Delta Academy 61, Immanuel Christian 20: At Marks, the Lady Rams were held to their second-lowest scoring output of the season Tuesday and had their season end in the opening round of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class A State Tournament. 

 

The only game the Lady Rams scored fewer points was when they scored 19 in another loss to Delta Academy. 

 

The Lady Rams, who were making their first state tournament, finished 19-14, a significant improvement from last season when they were 5-17. 

 

Katy-Whitten Davidson had a team-high seven points and three rebounds, Nyki Baudoin had six points and three assists, Abby Good had six points and four rebounds, and Taylor Baudoin grabbed seven rebounds. 

 

In other action, Amory advanced with a 58-53 victory against North Pontotoc in the Class 4A North Half State Tournament.
