Last week''s flooding caused major damage to Steens-Vernon Road, which will remain closed until at least Wednesday evening.
Floodwaters tore an 18-foot chunk out of the Steens road. The extensive damage means road crews will have to replace a culvert in the road.
"We don''t keep anything that big on the yard so I had to order it," said Lowndes County Road Manager Ronnie Burns. "We''re hoping to get it in the morning and have it opened back up late tomorrow."
The county ordered the culvert from Greenville at a cost of $4,600.
Steens-Vernon Road has been closed off since Friday night when torrential rains poured more than 5 inches of precipitation onto Lowndes County in less than 24 hours.
Crews hope to have the road opened again by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
