The simple assault charges Columbus Mayor Robert Smith and Ward Five Councilman Kabir Karriem filed against one another have been officially dropped, according to Lowndes County Justice Court officials.
On Thursday, both Smith and Karriem signed a joint statement forgiving each other for the April 1 fight, and they pledged to drop simple assault charges against each other. According to information provided by Lowndes County Justice Court, Judge Peggy Phillips signed off on an the agreement the two made.
Neither Smith or Karriem commented on the matter.
The charges stem from an April 1 confrontation between Smith and Karriem. Karriem reportedly confronted Smith at Smith”s office around 9:30 p.m. about the city”s plans to use a $2 million grant to restore the historic old Highway 82 bridge across the Tombigbee River into a pedestrian parkway.
A special City Council meeting concerning the bridge has been scheduled at 4 p.m. today at City Hall.
