Aberdeen school superintendent resigns

March 10, 2009

ABERDEEN -- Aberdeen School District Superintendent George Gilreath has resigned his position, effective June 30, after little more than a year at the helm of the school system.

Gilreath says he submitted his resignation to the board and will work hard to make the transition to a new superintendent go smoothly.

He says the decision will allow him to be closer to his family in the Brandon area. Gilreath was hired after serving as principal at Brandon High School for several years. He replaced longtime Aberdeen Superintendent Dr. Lavon Fluker-Reed, who retired last year.

Gilreath reportedly has had some disagreements with board president Michael Jackson and other board members since he started in January 2008.
