OXFORD — New Hope High School”s Kelli Petty won the 100 and 200 meters and the high jump Monday at the Class 5A-Region 1 meet at Oxford High School.
Petty, a senior who will go to Mississippi State on a track and field scholarship in the fall, won the 100 with a time of 12.34 seconds and the 200 with a time of 25.85. She won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 2 inches.
Starkville High”s Shay Bonner also was a double winner in the Class 6A-Region 1 meet. The senior, who will play basketball at Itawamba Community College in the fall, won the 110 hurdles (16.55) and the 300 hurdles (47.04).
The efforts were part of a solid all-around day from all of the local teams competing in both classes.
In Class 5A, the New Hope High girls 4×100-meter relay team took first with a time of 51.11.
West Point”s Curtis Virges won the Class 5A boys shot put (47-2 1/2). He also took second in the discus (134-3).
Other Class 5A boys qualifiers were: West Point High”s Justin Cox (third, 100, 11.25; second, triple jump, 44-10) and the West Point 4×200 relay team (fourth, 1:33.46).
Other Class 5A girls qualifiers were: the New Hope High 4×200 relay team (second, 1:52.41), the New Hope High 4×400 relay team (fourth, 4:39.03), Kia Edmonds (third, 300 hurdles, 50.88), and Mercades Mattix (fourth, 200, 27.90).
In Class 6A, Columbus” Danté Oliver won the boys 400 (47.99) and Deja Hubbard won the girls shot put (30-3). She also took second in the discus (87-5).
Starkville High”s Mary Elizabeth Stringer won the 800 (2:34.74). She also finished second in the 1,600 (5:55.39) and third in the 3,200 (13:26).
Other Class 6A girls qualifiers were: Starkville High”s Reshequia Henderson (fourth, 100, 12.83; second, 200, 26.24), Verlyncia Leonard (fourth, 400, 1:04.81), the Starkville 4×200 relay team (third, 1:45.95), the Starkville High 4×400 relay team (second, 4:16.13), the Columbus 4×100 relay team (fourth, 51.71), the Columbus 4×200 relay team (fourth, 1:49.05), and the Columbus 4×400 relay team (fourth, 4:19.14).
Other Class 6A boys qualifiers were: Starkville High”s Nathan Ball (fourth, 3,200, 11:23), Charles Hughes (fourth, 110 hurdles, 15.71; fourth, pole vault, 9-6), Julian Lewis (third, 100, 11.11), the Starkville 4×400 relay team (third, 3:28.32), Starkville High”s Craig Armstead (second, shot put, 45-0), Columbus High”s Sammy Doughty (second, high jump, 6-2), Columbus” Chris Wolfe (third, shot put, 44-1 1/2), and Columbus” Brandon Wright (second, triple jump, 42-1 1/2).
The top-four individual and relay team performances qualified for the North Half State meets.
