Students in Starkville public school grades 4-8 can go to school on foot Thursday, weather permitting, to celebrate another Walk to School Day.
This walk, sponsored by Starkville in Motion, is the most recent of several coordinated events encouraging young people to walk to school. It will begin at the Cadence Bank plaza on Main Street, with walks to Armstrong Middle School and Ward Stewart Henderson Elementary School.
Registration begins at 6:40 a.m., with the police-escorted walks themselves beginning at 7:10 a.m. Both walks will take about 12 minutes one way.
Before the event, students will have the opportunity to develop eight-word slogans to write on posters they can decorate and carry on the walk. The slogans are supposed to highlight the importance and benefits of walking to school. Winning slogans will be displayed at the schools and used for publicity.
“We have much to celebrate as Starkville is now a more walkable community, thanks in large part to the many curb cuts and improvement made recently across town using federal stimulus funds,” said Nicole Thomas, public information officer for the Starkville School District. “We look forward to the infrastructure improvements that will be made as part of Starkville”s Safe Routes to School grant in the near future.”
Rain will cancel the event. Participation is free and open to all students of the participating schools.
