The Columbus-Lowndes Public Library is among 12 library systems the Mississippi Library Commission (MLC) has named as Mississippi Library Stars for Fiscal Year 2016.
The concept of Library Stars comes from the national professional magazine, Library Journal. The publication separates library systems by expenditure categories reported on the annual Public Library Statistics report submitted to the Institute for Museum and Library Services. Star ratings are calculated by comparing libraries’ per capita rates in four areas: visits per capita, circulation per capita, total program attendance per capita and public Internet terminal uses per capita.
While Mississippi does not currently have any national Library Journal Library Stars, MLC has awarded Mississippi Library Stars to the best-scoring libraries in the state, recognizing the three highest-scoring library systems in each of four expenditure categories. Mississippi Library Stars were awarded to the following libraries for their performance in Fiscal Year 2016 (Oct. 1, 2015 – Sept. 30, 2016):
The winning libraries received a certificate and a Mississippi Star Library star to feature on their website. Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System Director Erin Busbea said, “This is a wonderful achievement for our library system. We pride ourselves on the services and resources that we provide to everyone in our county and the surrounding areas. We are very fortunate to be located in supportive communities that value the public library and what it does for the citizens of the area.”

The Mississippi Library Commission supports innovative programs and initiatives to strengthen and enhance library services for all Mississippians. The agency is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, with additional funding provided through the Institute of Museum and Library Services under provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, offering leadership in library services, advocacy and training for library professionals and paraprofessionals.
