The annual lighting of the Columbus community Christmas tree Monday evening is a great way to kick off the holiday season, said Main Street Columbus Executive Director Barbara Bigelow.
“Everyone is invited to gather from 5:30-7 p.m. at the east end of the Tombigbee pedestrian bridge where the city will have one of the beautiful magnolia trees decorated,” Bigelow said.
Caroling with the Cook Elementary Fourth Grade Choir begins at 5:30 p.m. Mayor Robert Smith will “flip the switch” to light the tree at approximately 6:15 p.m., and children will delight when “snow” begins falling.
Bring cameras for holiday pictures with Santa and Miz Claus. A professional photographer will be on hand to help capture special memories. In addition, Mickey and Minnie Mouse will visit the event which is sponsored by Rex’s Rentals; Colin Krieger, RE/MAX Partners, Starkville-Columbus; DMayfield Photography; Visit Columbus; McAlister’s; and Coffeehouse on 5th.
Children can make take-home crafts, and hot chocolate and cookies will be served. Those attending may also drop off a new, unwrapped toy for a child age 3 to 12 for the community toy drive, if they wish. Other drop-off locations include Cadence Bank and BankFirst.
“We hope everyone will bring their friends and families and enjoy this free community event,” said Bigelow. “This beautiful evening will give all kids, young and old, a wonderful, joyous time together — a night of family fun.”
