In a unanimous vote today, the Columbus City Council appointed Assistant Police Chief Fred Shelton to the position of chief of Columbus Police Department.

Shelton will begin immediately and is replacing former chief Oscar Lewis, who retired last month after nearly 20 years with CPD.

Shelton will work for a salary of $72,000 for the first three months. After a 90-day period, his annual salary will increase to $74,160.

Shelton has worked for CPD for more than 30 years, the last two of which he spent as assistant chief.

His hiring was one of four personnel matters discussed during executive session of the city's first council meeting of the year and one of two personnel matters involving CPD.

The Dispatch will update this story in its Wednesday print edition.
