Mississippi Theatre Festival and Convention — Mississippi University for Women hosts this statewide festival for community theater and high school theater productions, many of which are open to the public. K-12 students may attend free Theatre for Youth Festival performances Jan. 12 at Cook Elementary School (contact Sherri Marengo at [email protected]). MLK Commemoration — A complimentary breakfast (while space lasts) begins at 8 a.m. at Trotter Convention Center in downtown Columbus in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Remarks will be by Rust College President David L. Beckley. Free registration; RSVP at muw.edu/mlk.
Unity Breakfast and Day of Service — Mississippi State hosts a free community-wide breakfast at 8 a.m. at The Mill, 600 Russell St., Starkville, followed by a 9 a.m. program featuring former Rep. Community Health and Wellness Fair — Americorps Vista and the Columbus Arts Council host a health and wellness fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Rosenzweig Arts Center, 501 Main St., Columbus. Free health screenings, healthy snacks, on-site instructors for yoga, yogaflex, pilates and info from area nonprofits. Free.

Frostbite Half-Marathon — This half-marathon benefit for the Starkville Fire Department includes a 10K and 5K begins and ends on Starkville’s Main Street. Races begin at 9 a.m. For more information or to register, go to frostbitehalf.com before Jan. 18. Medals awarded at noon.
