A Columbus man has been arrested for a fatal shooting outside Motel 6 last month.
Authorities found and arrested Johnathan Lee Majors II, 27, of 300 South Lehmberg Road, Apt. No. 135, in an abandoned house in Columbus Tuesday, according to a Columbus Police Department press release. The release said officers believe Majors had been sleeping in the house several days.
Majors is charged with murder.
Authorities have been searching for Majors since Dec. 22, the same day as the Motel 6 shooting. Shortly after midnight, CPD officers were called to the motel where they found 27-year-old Michael Garth outside the building with a gunshot wound. Garth died at the scene.
Later that day, CPD released Majors’ name and mugshot and announced he was a person of interest in the shooting.
CPD officers who found Majors were aided by law enforcement from Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, the combined drug task force and the U.S. Marshal’s Service, the press release said.
CPD Chief Fred Shelton said Majors will likely go before a judge today.
