A Columbus Fire and Rescue fire engine was involved in a traffic accident Saturday with a civilian driver while responding to a fire call, according to a department press release.
Engine 24, housed on Airline Road, was responding to a fire alarm on Maxwell Lane at about 12:02 p.m., the release said. At the intersection of North McCrary Road and Forrest Boulevard, another vehicle came to a complete stop, but then proceeded in an attempt to get across the intersection in front of the fire engine, thus causing the collision.
A-Shift Battalion Chief Scott Swain said the driver of the civilian vehicle admitted fault. No one was seriously injured in the collision.
CFR Public Information Officer Anthony Colom told The Dispatch the fire call turned out to be a false alarm.
“In an effort to stop accidents and injuries from happening while responding to calls, we run various awareness campaigns throughout the year asking motorist to yield the right of way to emergency response vehicles, and to please pull to the right for sirens and lights,” Fire Chef Martin Andrews said in a prepared statement.
