OXFORD — The Caledonia High School dropped two games Thursday on the final day of the Oxford Spring Break Baseball Classic at Moak Field.
Caledonia dropped a 15-3 decision to Oxford in its first game. It finished its tournament play with a 9-5 loss to North Pontotoc in eight innings.
Oxford brought the run rule into effect by scoring four times in the first inning, six times in the second, and five times in the third.
Caledonia (4-5) was held to five hits and committed five errors after building a 2-0 lead in the first.
Westlee Honeycutt had two hits for the Confederates. Beau Bates, Tyler McAdams, Seth Brown, and Sawyer Brown each had hits.
Houston Mims threw the first inning and took the loss.
In the second game, Caledonia scored five times in the fifth to erase a 5-0 deficit before falling in the extra frame.
Seth Brown had two hits and an RBI. Bates had the other hit. Bates, Cade Stacy, and Hunter McMurphey each had RBIs.
Seth Brown pitched the final 5 2/3 innings and took the loss. Bates drew the start and was lifted in a three-run third.
On Wednesday, Caledonia beat West Point 9-8 in eight innings and lost to Lafayette 2-0.
Against West Point, Caledonia held a 3-0 lead entering the seventh. The Green Wave struck for seven runs in the top half of the seventh before the Confederates scored four times in the home half to force the extra inning.
Honeycutt had three hits for the Confederates. McMurphey and Sawyer Brown each drove in two runs. McMurphey, Tony Brooks, Sawyer Brown, and Stacy had the other hits.
McMurphey drew the start and was lifted with one out in the fifth after allowing no runs and no hits. Seth Brown finished the seventh and threw the eighth inning to pick up the win.
Bates and Mims had the only hits in the loss to Lafayette.
Stacy allowed six hits and two runs (both earned) in six innings. He struck out 11.
West Point (5-7) also finished 1-3 in the tournament. On Tuesday, West Point beat Amory 3-2 before losing to Houston 9-4. After the game against Caledonia on Wednesday, the Green Wave finished tournament play with a 6-5 loss to Cleveland Central.
In the game against Cleveland Central, Roe Ketchum had three hits, while Marquez Carter, Jake Chambless, and Bryant Robert Watson had two hits. Watson and Chambless had two RBIs.
Ketchum was the lone Green Wave player with multiple hits against Caledonia.
n Starkville High School ends road trip with loss: At Niceville, Florida, In its final game on its spring break road trip, Starkville High dropped a 15-0 decision to Niceville (Fla.) on Thursday afternoon.
Ranked in the top 10 nationally, Niceville has four Southeastern Conference verbal commitments.
Starkville (6-4) opens region play Tuesday when it plays host to Madison Central.
n In other prep baseball action Thursday afternoon, Columbus dropped two decisions in the Louisville Spring Break Classic.
Columbus (1-3) fell 10-4 to Louisville and 13-1 to Choctaw Central.
n Heritage Academy wins
tournament: An action-packed three days of baseball action ended Wednesday when Heritage Academy beat Starkville Academy 15-11 to win the Golden Triangle Baseball Classic at Volunteer Field.
The inaugural spring break event featured Starkville Academy, Heritage Academy, and Oak Hill Academy against several out-of-area teams with games played at Starkville Academy, Heritage Academy, and Oak Hill Academy.
To set up the championship match, Starkville Academy beat Indianola Academy 5-1 and Heritage Academy evened its season series with Oak Hill Academy by taking an 8-5 victory.
Against Indianola Academy, Starkville Academy received a huge lift from Will Miller, who threw five innings and allowed three hits and one run. He struck out seven.
Nason Heflin had two RBI singles. The Volunteers scored two other runs on errors and one on a wild pitch.
In Wednesday’s second game, Kyle Faver had five hits, including a double, a home run, and six RBIs.
The Volunteers built a 7-1 lead on a two-run single by Faver and an RBI single by Heflin in the first, an RBI double by Cameron McKee in the third, and a three-run home run by Faver in the fourth.
Heritage Academy responded with 10 runs in the top of the fifth for an 11-7 lead. Faver had a two-run single and Will Holley had an RBI when he reached as a bases-loaded hit batsman in the home half of the fifth.
After Heritage Academy ran the lead to 15-10, an RBI single by Faver in the seventh ended the scoring.
Against Oak Hill Academy, Carter Putt had two hits and three RBIs. Blayze Berry had four RBIs. Reid Huskison pitched six innings.
For Oak Hill Academy, Collins Brown had two hits, Ethan Bryan had a hit, and Dylan Scott had two RBIs. Cole Ketchum struck out five in 3 1/3 innings.
