If you”re downtown tonight around 7, be still and listen. You might hear the Sounds of Summer.
The summer concert series co-sponsored by Columbus Main Street and The Columbus-Lowndes Development Link returns tonight with a show by local favorites Keith and Margie. The series will continue every Thursday in June and July.
The shows, held at the Riverwalk stage, are free. Each show will run from 7 to 9 p.m.
Amber Brislin, director of Columbus Main Street, encourages listeners to bring lawn chairs to get comfortable, but leave coolers at home. Vendors will be on hand for food and drinks.
Sounds of Summer began in 2008 confined to an 8-foot-by-20-foot space on the Riverwalk. Attendance grew quickly and steadily, and a permanent stage with electricity and lights was constructed in 2009 with city funds.
Sometime this summer,
Brislin said, concrete steps will be constructed near the stage for seating. The concerts sometimes draw as many as 400 listeners, she said.
“The reason it”s been so successful is the music. There”s something for everybody. For younger people, for older people and for children,” she said. “And the Riverwalk is such an asset. There are so many things you can do. To feature live music down there is a no-brainer.”
