STARKVILLE — The Starkville High School football team completed its second spring practice session under Chris Jones with a 24-7 victory against Whitehaven (Tennessee) in the final game of the opening day of the Starkville Spring Jamboree Friday night at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
Luke Altmyer was 16 of 23 for 253 yards with a touchdown and an interception to lead the offense. NyJal Johnson was 9 of 13 for 102 yards with an interception.
While the Yellow Jackets threw for 355 yards, the ground game struggled with 20 yards on 20 rushes. Rodrigues Clark scored on a 3-yard run.
Rufus Harvey caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Altmyer as the Yellow Jackets erased a 7-0 deficit. Jalil Clemons scored on a 5-yard fumble return before Clark’s score made it 21-7 at halftime. Peyton Rogers kicked a 31-yard field goal.
Keyshawn Lawrence led the defense with six tackles. Clemons had two tackles for loss.
Starkville scored the only touchdown by either team in a fourth quarter played by the junior varsity.
n West Point wins twice: At West Point, the two-time reigning Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 5A State champions concluded spring ball with two shutouts at Hamblin Stadium.
In a varsity halves, West Point shut out South Panola 14-0 and Meridian 7-0. Against South Panola, Jimothy Mays scored on a 3-yard run, while Jaylun Eggerson scored on a 1-yard run. Against Meridian, Kam Martin scored on a 1-yard run.
In the junior varsity competition, West Point dropped an 18-6 decision to South Panola and defeated Meridian 12-6.
