The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has lifted a water contact advisory for a section of Hollis Creek near the city’s water treatment plant.
MDEQ issued the advisory for the plant, which is located at 305 Sand Rd. in south Starkville, on May 13 after the city discovered a break in a six-inch sewage line during routine testing. The contact advisory meant that people were advised to stay out of the water due to sewage discharge entering the creek. Some residences are in the plant’s general vicinity, but the matter had limited impact because Hollis Creek flows south from the plant, which is on Starkville’s southern border.
On Thursday, MDEQ said water testing has confirmed that the water has returned to normal. The department said people can now engage in regular contact activities such as swimming or wading and can consume fish or anything else taken from the water.
