Columbus police are searching for a suspect in an attempted robbery at the Wingate Hotel early Saturday morning.
In a press release the police department issued on Wednesday, Chief Fred Shelton said a black man with medium build entered the hotel, located at 129 Brickerton St. near The Shops at Brickerton, just after 4 a.m. and tried to open a safe behind the check-in counter.
An employee on duty heard the suspect trying to break into the safe and confronted him, the press release said. The suspect then pushed the clerk as he ran from the building.
No one was seriously injured and the suspect never gained access to the safe, according to the press release.
Police have released a photo of the suspect taken from hotel surveillance. He’s described as wearing a blue shirt, blue pants and a bandanna. He also has a “bright gold tooth.”
Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to contact Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 800-530-7151.
