The Greater Starkville Development Partnership is getting artsy. The economic development, tourism and community development office will present a Downtown Art Walk from 2-5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14. Deadline to apply as an art vendor is 5 p.m. Aug. 31.
"The Partnership is currently seeking artists to set up in the Main Street District for this fun, new, artistic retail promotion event," said Paige Watson, GSDP special events and projects coordinator.
The art walk is exclusive to handmade fine art or fine craft. Applicants will be juried; all decisions are final.
"We're looking to have anywhere from 10 to 15 artists and will spread them on Main Street and Russell Street," Watson said. Applicants must be the artist who creates the hand-crafted fine art. All work must be original. No mass produced or commercial products will be accepted.
Vendor spaces will be 10-by-10 feet; The Partnership will provide tents. Electricity will not be available at tents. No Mississippi State University merchandise can be sold, or any other items that require a license. Setup for selected artists will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 14. Takedown will start promptly at 5 p.m., and all spaces must be completely cleared and cleaned by 5:30 p.m.
For applications, visit starkville.org or stop by The Partnership office at 200 E. Main St. in Starkville. For more information, or to submit applications, email Watson at [email protected] Artists must include three to five photos of their artwork to be sold
"This is a retail promotion to get people walking around downtown, get people out and about," Watson said. "I feel like the Starkville arts scene is very vibrant right now, and we're trying to capture that momentum."
Downtown Art Walk is part of Starkville's New South Weekends which include special events on home-game weekends for residents and game visitors. Other New South events this fall include a Night Market, Bulldog Bash, Pumpkinpalooza and a citywide tailgate.
