Columbus' Kmart, 2308 Hwy 45 N., will close by November of this year.
According a press release from Sears Holdings, which owns both Kmart and Sears, the Columbus location is one of 46 unprofitable Sears and Kmart locations that will shutter. The press release also said liquidation sales could start as early as Aug. 30.
The Columbus store is the only one in Mississippi on the list of closures.
Moving closer to town, Mexican food mainstay La Fiesta Mexican Grill, 1921 U.S. Hwy. 45 in Columbus, appears to have closed its doors. La Fiesta currently has signs on each door stating "closed." The Dispatch called the restaurant but could not reach a representative to confirm.
The Windchase shopping center in Columbus that houses Ashley Furniture, UMI, Dollar General and Mugshots has recently been placed on the market for a cool $7 million.
The building was constructed in 1983 to house Columbus' first Walmart and boasts 106,000 square feet of space.
The listing notes that Ashley has just signed a new seven year lease, which indicates the furniture retailer intends to stay in the Columbus market for the coming future.
After 13 years of business, Starkville's gift shop, The Purple Elephant at 401 Suite A Lampkin St., prepares to close its doors this Saturday. It announced its closure in the beginning of August by having a "store closing sale." Columbus manager Sarah Barefield said the business will now shift focus to The Purple Elephant in Columbus at 441 Wilkins Wise Road.
With locations already in Columbus and Starkville, Spiller Furniture & Mattress is hitting the third point in the Golden Triangle by announcing a store opening in West Point. On Wednesday, Spiller announced the West Point location was open for business Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m, and will be closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. It is located at the old Movie Gallery location at 509 W. Main St.
