A truck fire in Lowndes County held up traffic Sunday on Highway 82 West.
A Ford Ranger driven by Robert Nelson, of Columbus, overheated shortly before 2 p.m. Nelson pulled to the side of the road and stood behind his vehicle while smoke billowed from the engine.
The truck eventually caught fire and firefighters from Lowndes County and East Oktibbeha fire departments responded. Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop G information officer Brian Mobley said the road was shut down for nearly an hour for fear the truck”s fuel tank might explode.
The truck was towed Monday to give it time to completely cool off. Nelson was alone in the vehicle and was unharmed.
