The chancery clerk election in Lowndes is now a two-person race.
Andre D. Roberts qualified for chancery clerk Friday, running against fellow Republican Cindy Egger Goode. Goode is a deputy clerk in the chancery clerk’s office and will be endorsed by current chancery clerk Lisa Younger Neese, who will retire at the end of 2019.
This is Roberts’ fourth bid for public office. He ran unsuccessfully against Neese in 2011 and 2015 and challenged Bill Gavin’s Ward 6 seat on Columbus City Council in 2017.
In other races, former Columbus police officer Spence Wallingford qualified to run for constable in District 2 against fellow Republican Austin Strickland. Wallingford resigned from CPD in 2009 after 17 years during an investigation into his misuse of a CPD computer and patrol car. He now works in the Mississippi Department of Corrections probation and parole department.
Joe Ables is currently the constable of District 2. He had not qualified as of Friday afternoon.
Republican Steve Wallace, a Columbus-based lawyer, qualified for county attorney. Chris Griffin qualified for constable in District 1 and will run against fellow Republican Randy ‘Soldier’ Robles. Currently District 1 constable Hoot West has not qualified for re-election.
District 3 Constable Sonny Sanders, a Democrat, qualified for re-election.
Qualifications will remain open until March 1 and primaries are set for Aug. 6.
