Education gets a two-day celebration in Starkville this weekend as parent organizations are holding events to raise money for education and to show off the new schools.
On Saturday, Music on the Green will provide an evening of live music from 5-9 p.m. on the Overstreet Playground. Tickets are $2 for adults, $1 for kids, and those under 5 get in free. Food and soft drinks can be purchased, and families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and spend the evening with family and friends.
Several local acts will perform. The Starkville Foundation for Public Education is presenting Music on the Green. Proceeds will fund teacher grants and student scholarships.
On Sunday afternoon, school officials will host ceremonies and tours of the recently completed building projects at all four Starkville schools. Building for the Future Showcase runs from 2-4 p.m. Ceremonies will be held at Sudduth at 2:15, Henderson Ward Stewart at 2:45, Armstrong at 3:15 and the high school at 3:45.
This event will be co-hosted by Parents for Public Schools Starkville and the Starkville School District.
“The Starkville School District began the 2010 school year built for the future, thanks to a $26.5 million dollar bond issue passed in 2007. The largest school bond issue in Starkville history helped transform four campuses in the Starkville School District into state of the art facilities, fully equipped with the latest technology,” said Starkville public information officer Nicole Thomas. “The vision of 2007 became a reality in 2010, when (on Aug. 5) students on every campus of the Starkville School District walked through the doors of the new and renovated facilities.”
