Through September, the Macon Welcome Center will feature the artworks of Dora Taff McDaniel, a Southern artist with roots in Noxubee County. McDaniel has attained a solid reputation among designers and art collectors for her exquisite watercolor interpretations, as well as for her skills in oil and acrylics. Her Southern heritage gives her paintings, in all media, a distinct panache, attracting national interest.
McDaniel”s education in the South, and subsequent years teaching art, have served to enhance her style, technique and knack for choosing unique themes. Her oil works excel in many subjects, from everyday staples of fruit and vegetables, to finely detailed landscapes, to impressionistic water scenes.
Her whimsical series of paintings featuring the back view of her longtime friends have acquired almost cult status among her followers. The singer, Faith Hill, purchased one of these paintings for her Seaside, Fla., home. Her works can also be found in the private collections of Oprah Winfrey and Ted Turner.
In Atlanta, McDaniel is represented by Fred Reed Framers, Foxglove Antiques and Chrismore Gifts; in Blue Ridge, Ga., by High Country Art and Antiques; in Chapel Hill, N.C. by Peacock Alley; in Washington, D.C. by Foxhall Gallery; and in Seaside, by FABS, as well as other galleries.
In the past, her works have been featured by Anne Irwin Fine Arts, Kersey Gallery, Horchow Catalog, Swan Coach House Gallery, Southern Living Homes in Atlanta and Nashville, Trinity School Art Auction, Montgomery Museum of Art Show, the windows of Tiffany and Co., and numerous others.
The Macon Welcome Center on South Jefferson Street is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and by appointment. The McDaniel exhibit will hang through Sept. 30. For more information, contact the center at 662-726-2511
