An armed robbery attempt turned into a shootout at an East Columbus convenience store and ended with two people transported to the hospital.
Police responded to the Food Mart at 227 N. McCrary Road around 11 p.m. on Saturday, where two male suspects attempted an armed robbery.
The store owner opened fire, striking one suspect.
One or both of the suspects returned fire, reportedly shooting the store owner under the arm.
The store owner, whose name was not released Saturday night, was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, as was the injured suspect.
Their conditions were unknown just after midnight.
The second suspect fled the scene; authorities pursued him into Clay County.
Several casings were visible inside and outside of the store. An 18-wheeler parked outside of the business was shot multiple times.
