MACON — The Noxubee County High School football team did what was necessary on both sides of the ball Friday night, rolling up 21 points and holding Kosciusko scoreless in a 21-0 Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A, Region 4 victory.
The Tigers (6-1, 1-0 region) need to improve offensively, Noxubee County coach Tyrone Shorter said.
“We didn”t play our best offensively,” Shorter said. “But then we”ve got six kids out right now.”
The Tigers used rushing touchdowns from Corey Williams and Deangelo Ballard and a pass reception by Terrence Barron to open the region the right way.
Shorter said he was pleased with his team”s defense.
“I think we did well on defense, keeping them out of the end zone,” he said. “They have a young team; they played us tough. Their defense played us really well.”
Noxubee County will travel to Amory for a Region 4 battle on Friday.
n Lamar Academy 56, Oak Hill Academy 21: At West Point, Lamar Academy of Meridian jumped out to a big lead and coasted to an easy victory.
Bo Sanford was Oak Hill Academy”s offensive weapon, scoring all three touchdowns for the home team.
Sanford returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score, caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Conner Baird for all of the second-quarter scoring. He also scored on a 96-yard run in the fourth quarter. Reid Posey booted all three Oak Hill extra points.
Oak Hill coach Leroy Gregg said Lamar Academy”s size advantage gave it a big edge.
“Lamar”s junior high is probably bigger than we are,” he said.
The loss dropped Oak Hill to 2-5, while Lamar improved to 3-3. Oak Hill will travel Friday to Manchester Academy.
n East Webster 27, Eupora 0: At Maben, Timakis Bell rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns to spark the undefeated Wolverines.
Bell rushed 21 times, scoring on touchdowns of 3 and 17 yards. Ledrick Patterson also threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Josh Gladney and an 11-yarder to Lilton Vance.
Tyler Gregg had 11 tackles to lead East Webster”s defense. Gladney had 10 and Miguel Graham had six tackles, two interceptions, and two blocked passes.
East Webster (7-0, 1-0 MHSAA Class 2A, Region 2) will travel Friday to Ackerman to continue its regional play.
n Aberdeen 38, Winona 14: At Winona, the Bulldogs scored on every possession but one in rolling to the MHSAA Class 3A, Region 2 victory.
Aberdeen jumped ahead 21-0 at halftime after Victor Hodges scored from 3 and 25 yards and quarterback Desmond Jones scored on a 2-yard run. The last touchdown was set up when Jonnie Wilson recovered Nick Glover”s fumble.
Winona scored early in the third quarter when Chief Brown ended the first drive with a 2-yard run. Aberdeen countered on Jones” 11-yard scamper for a score and a 28-7 lead.
Winona scored on pass from Glover to tight end Dave Carter for 23 yards score that made it 28-14, but Hodges scored on a 5-yard run on the next possession. Hodges accounted for 32 rushing yards on the drive, while Aaron McMillian had a 24-yard reception to the 7.
Hodges led all rushers with 31 carries for 169 yards and three touchdowns.
Antonio Crayton added a 29-yard field goal for Aberdeen, which will play host to Water Valley on Friday.
n West Oktibbeha 27, Weir 19: At Weir, the Lions controlled the ball in the final eight minutes to grab the victory behind the rushing of Jimarrian Woodard (31 carries, 209 yards).
West Oktibbeha (5-2, 4-1 region) scored the game”s first points on Von Smith”s 7-yard pass to Dwight Quinn.
Weir countered with Zack Woodard”s 86-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff.
Weir opened the second half with another Woodard touchdown, this one from 6 yards. West Oktibbeha never regained the lead.
Weir quarterback J.R. Hall threw for two touchdowns in the second half, hitting Mario Hemphill on a 27-yard pass play and Rashad Carter on a 34-yard score.
West Oktibbeha”s points in the second half came from Tiberias Lampkin”s 39-yard reception from Smith and a 1-yard blast.
Smith was 22 of 27 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns.
West Oktibbeha will play host to Ethel on Friday.
n East Oktibbeha 64, Thomastown 0: At Thomastown, the Titans picked up their first win of the season with a true team effort.
Marlon Fair led the offense with 84 rushing yards rushing and three touchdowns. Quarterback Chris Hunter had four touchdowns — rushing 32 yards for two and passing 173 yards for two more.
Kortland Petty caught one touchdown passes and had 76 yards receiving.
Defensively, Monte Horsley led East Oktibbeha with nine tackles and three sacks, while Davalyn Bell had two interceptions.
East Oktibbeha (1-6, 1-4 in MHSAA Class A, Region 3) will play host to Edinburg on Friday.
n Central Academy 60, Delta Academy 28: At Macon, the Vikings (7-0) stayed undefeated with almost 500 yards of total offense as it prepares for next week”s game against North Sunflower Academy.
“(North Sunflower Academy) is going to be a big conference game for us,” Central Academy coach Ronnie Sciple said.
Because of the wide margin of victory, Central Academy got a chance to play a lot of substitutes. The 7-0 start to the season is believed to be the longest winning streak in school history.
Will Disbrow carried four times for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while Cole Newman had seven carries for 119 yards and one touchdown.
Central Academy opened the scoring on a 51-yard touchdown pass from Ferris McGuire to Rowdy Rigdon. Delta Academy bounced back with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The Vikings then started their ground attack, getting a 63-yard scoring run by Newman. Central Academy”s Britt Reynolds caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from McGuire in the first quarter.
McGuire followed with a 62-yard run to put Central Academy ahead 30-6. Jay Jones then scampered 72 yards for another score. The ensuing kickoff was returned 75 yards for another Delta Academy touchdown. The first half ended with the Vikings leading 38-12.
Disbrow ripped off a 60-yard scoring run, followed by A.J. Jernigan”s 30-yard run. In the fourth quarter, Delta Academy scored on a 29-yard run and on a 52-yard pass.
Disbrow added a 72-yard touchdown run to end the scoring.
On defense, Drew Pearson led the Vikings with 11 tackles and two forced fumbles. Jones added five tackles, while Newman, McGuire and Disbrow each had four tackles. Rigdon added an interception, and Cody Brown recovered a fumble.
