A 23-year veteran Columbus police officer has resigned from his position in the wake of accusations he raped a woman and violated departmental policies.
Patrol Division Cpl. Ed Freeland, of Lowndes County, resigned from the department effective Monday of this week.
His resignation closes an investigation into allegations he broke undisclosed departmental policies, said Chief Joseph St. John.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is still looking into a woman”s accusation that Freeland raped her, St. John said.
Freeland, who had often acted as a shift leader, had been suspended without pay since September.
