Investigators are still trying to determine what caused a Wednesday night fire on Garrard Road.
The blaze was reported around 10 p.m. in a duplex at 300 Garrard Road, Starkville Fire Marshal Stein McMullen said. When firefighters from nearby Fire Station No. 3 arrived, they found furniture and flooring on fire, McMullen said.
Additional firefighters from Fire Station No. 1 arrived to assist shortly thereafter and the blaze was extinguished within minutes, McMullen said.
Nobody was injured, but the fire did cause heavy smoke damage throughout the apartment. The neighboring unit “got smoke in it, but not a lot,” McMullen said.
Investigators are still trying to determine where and how the fire started.
At least two people who lived in the unit were displaced, McMullen said. The American Red Cross contacted the fire victims Thursday for assistance purposes, he said.
