BATON ROUGE, La. — La Sondra Barrett had a game-high 19 points Thursday night to lead three players in double figures in the LSU women”s basketball team”s 78-43 victory against the University of Mississippi at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The Lady Tigers (13-7, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) rode a 17-0 second-half run and played their most complete game of the SEC season to start a four-game homestand on a positive note.
“That was about as good a second half as we could play,” LSU coach Van Chancellor said. “I don”t think we could play much better than we played in the second half. I thought it was a complete effort. Our defense tonight was outstanding. We played a great defensive game throughout, (only allowing) 43 points.”
LSU improved to 55-5 under Chancellor when holding an opponent to under 50 points. It was the 12th straight victory for the Lady Tigers when surrendering less than 50 points.
Ole Miss dropped to 8-9 and 1-4. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Rebels.
The win was the largest for LSU against Ole Miss in Baton Rouge in series history.
Barrett, who is from Jackson, had 17 of her 19 points in the second half. She also had seven rebounds and tied a career-high with seven assists. Adrienne Webb had 17 points and Jeanne Kenney added 15 points and tied her own LSU freshman record for threes in an SEC game with five. Kenney also made five last week at Mississippi State.
Kayla Melson led Ole Miss with 14 points and six assists. Ole Miss will play at 2 p.m. Sunday at No. 23 Arkansas.
n Southern Miss 86, Tulane 81, OT: At New Orleans, Freshman Jamierra Faulkner and junior Rachel Vigers combined for 46 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Lady Eagles (7-11, 2-3 Conference USA).
Faulkner just missed a triple-double with nine rebounds to go with 11 assists and a game-high 24 points. Vigers scored 20 points and Brittany Johnson came off the bench to chip in 16 points.
In the overtime, USM used an 8-0 run in the final 1 minute, 26 seconds to snap a three-game losing streak.
Roshaunda Barnes led Tulane (15-3, 4-1) with 22 points to pace five players in double figures.
n No. 24 Georgia 60, Alabama 51: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Khaalidah Miller scored 12 points to help Georgia beat Alabama to win its sixth straight game.
Meredith Mitchell added 10 points while Porsha Phillips had 11 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs (15-3, 5-0 SEC), who remained one of two unbeaten teams in the SEC.
Tierney Jenkins had her 36th career double-double with 24 points and 11 points for the Crimson Tide (11-8, 0-6).
