STARKVILLE — Dennis Thames” career as a Mississippi State football player is over.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound safety was dismissed from the team today for a violation of team rules.
Thames was arrested May 31 for possession of marijuana and alcohol in a motor vehicle, Winston County corrections warden Tim Palmer said today.
Thames was booked at 12:17 p.m. and released at 1:26 p.m., Palmer said.
Arresting officer Danny Keith Stanley of the Winston County Sheriff”s Department wasn”t available for further details as he”s currently on National Guard duty and won”t return to work until Wednesday. Chief Deputy David Edwards won”t return to work until Monday.
Head coach Dan Mullen wouldn”t comment outside of a team statement saying Thames was dismissed.
Thames, a former Dandy Dozen selection and three-star recruit (Scout.com and Rivals.com) from Louisville High, was a redshirt freshman last season. He finished the year with 10 tackles, including one for a loss and two pass breakups.
He was listed as Charles Mitchell”s backup on the depth chart.
Thames” latest run-in with the law is his second known to date after being arrested for “public intoxication-other substance” shortly after his senior year was completed and before he arrived at MSU.
Last season, Thames was suspended for the UAB game for a violation of team rules.
