Mississippi State University football fans who are anticipating the 2011 season are encouraged to join the Starkville Quarterback Club.
The club, which will open its 46th season of weekly meetings Aug. 30, is devoted to promoting MSU football.
Brent Deweese, the club president for 2011, said the club is expecting a large membership this year after the Bulldogs went 9-4 and defeated the University of Michigan 52-14 in the Gator Bowl.
“If you are a MSU football fan, the Starkville Quarterback Club is the place for you,” Deweese said.
Each week, an assistant football coach will give a scouting report on MSU”s opponent. The report by the coaches are followed by a primary speaker for the evening. The club works closely with MSU”s athletic department in lining up speakers.
Deweese said MSU coach Dan Mullen will be the keynote speaker at the Aug. 30 meeting. MSU men”s basketball coach Rick Stansbury and MSU baseball coach John Cohen also are scheduled to update club members on their teams.
MSU Athletic Director Scott Stricklin will speak one week, and other sports authorities, including members of ESPN”s announcing teams, are being contacted.
The awarding of door prizes each week is popular with club members. A helmet autographed by all of the season”s speakers is given away at the last gathering of the year. In addition, a wide variety of MSU apparel, accessories, tailgate supplies, and football-related items are given away each week.
The club meets Thursday evenings during football season at the Starkville Country Club, except on weeks when there”s a Thursday night game, when meetings are Tuesdays. Social hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by a meal, door prizes, and speakers beginning at 7 p.m.
Dues for the Quarterback Club remain unchanged from 2010. Membership is $125 for the season. For an additional $60, members are provided a meal that includes a meat (a weekly rotation of fried catfish filets, fried chicken, hamburger steaks, and pork chops), two vegetables, salad, bread, drink, and dessert for each of the 12 meetings. Quarterback Club members don”t have to be members of the Starkville Country Club.
Local businesses, banks, law firms, and physicians that assist the club as sponsors will be recognized each week.
Membership information has already been mailed to last year”s members. That information should be returned as soon as possible. Potential members and sponsors who haven”t received information by mail or email can go to http://www.starkvillequarterbackclub.com and print a registration form to mail in.
