Jacob Gable thought he and the Green Oaks Golf Club had a strong team that was ready to try to hold on to the Arbre Cup.
Gable didn’t know he and his teammates would play so well in defense of that trophy.
Green Oaks built an early lead in scramble play and went on to a 22.5-9.5 victory against Elm Lake Golf Course in the second annual Arbre Cup at Green Oaks Golf Club.
“I felt like we had a strong team, but I never thought they would be so dominant,” Gable said. “In the team competitions, our guys brother in law’d pretty well all day in the scramble and four-ball matches to give ourselves a big enough lead going into the singles matches. I feel that took some pressure off our guys and put it back on the Elm Lake team. Normally when you put pressure on yourself you have a hard time pulling off the shots you are trying to play.”
The event is a Ryder Cup-styled event that pits Green Oaks against Elm Lake. It features nine holes of scramble play, nine holes of four ball, and nine holes of singles play.
Last year, Green Oaks won the inaugural event, which was organized by Gable and Elm Lake golf professional Joseph Hanko II.
Green Oaks pushed its lead to 12-4 following four-ball play.
In singles play, Green Oaks’ Gable beat Albert McBrayer, Elm Lake’s Tom McMurdy defeated Zac Taylor, Green Oaks’ Dana Studdard halved his match with Jack Martin, Green Oak’s Greg Bryant beat George Hinnant, Green Oaks’ Owen Odem defeated Butch Luke, Green Oaks’ Bart Bartowick beat David Harrington, Green Oaks’ Joey Persechino beat Isaac Gerhart, Green Oaks’ Arl Taylor, defeated David Criddle, Elm Lake’s Tom Cooley beat Dennis Cox, Green Oaks’ Marty Hawkins defeated Ken Roberts, Green Oaks’ Roger Wade beat John Gillis, Elm Lake’s John Pederson defeated Carl Lisowski, Green Oaks’ James Gable halved his match against Ken Jaynes, Green Oaks’ Wayne Box beat Henry McQueen, Green Oaks’ Skip Egger halved his match against George Geer, and Elm Lake’s Homwer Swain defeated Doug Murrah.
“It was a great day of fellowship between the clubs,” Gable said. “The Green Oaks team is looking forward to traveling across town to play at Elm Lake next year.”
