Ole Miss baseball has the 'Power'

Danny P Smith

The University of Mississippi baseball team has been known to unleash its "Power" on opponents the past four seasons.

As outfielder Logan Power has driven in runs, it has usually led to success for Ole Miss.

Since his arrival in 2006, Power has helped the Rebels to a four-season record of 159-86, trips to three NCAA Regionals, and appearances in two Super Regionals.

"He''s helped us win a lot of baseball games," Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. "He''s been super consistent throughout his career."

With five RBIs against Auburn on Sunday, Power became the Rebels'' all-time RBI leader with 171, eclipsing Kyle Gordon''s mark of 168.

Power got the word he was Ole Miss'' new RBI king from media relations contact Bill Bunting.

"I had no idea," Power said. "It''s an awesome feeling, but I''m just focusing on helping my team in every situation."

Bianco knew when he was recruiting Power he was getting a good player out of Hillcrest Christian School of Jackson.

But Bianco didn''t know Power would break the career RBI mark before he was done.

"I don''t think you ever recruit a kid you don''t think can come in and contribute," Bianco said. "We thought he was outstanding when he was at Hillcrest and would have a good career here."

As a freshman in 2006, Power hit .328 with two home runs and 23 RBIs. He increased his power numbers to 11 home runs and 51 RBIs as a sophomore. He hit .329 with nine home runs and 51 RBIs last season.

This season, he has five home runs and 46 RBIs.

"He''s taken on a bigger and bigger role every year," Bianco said. "He''s been in the middle of the lineup practically his whole career."

Power said playing for Ole Miss has been an unbelievable experience. He won''t forget the things he and the Rebels have accomplished, but there is one more thing he''d like to do: Power returned for his senior season to lead the Rebels to the College World Series.

"I want to help this team get to Omaha where we deserve to be," Power said.

Whether Ole Miss'' season ends at Rosenblatt Stadium remains to be seen, but Bianco hopes Power can help the Rebels (36-13, 16-8 SEC) have success against Mississippi State (21-26, 6-17) beginning tonight.

"I think everyone realizes anytime we play Mississippi State in anything, because of the rivalry, both teams come ready to play," Bianco said.

The three-game Southeastern set in Oxford begins at 6:30 tonight and continues at 3 p.m. Saturday (FOX SportsNet) and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

It will be an emotional series for Power, as most of his family attended MSU and his older brother, Mark, played baseball for the Bulldogs from 1993-97.

"I grew up watching Mississippi State baseball," Power said. "I realized about the age of 10 how big (the rivalry) was."
