Herring, Tice plan meeting in support of Hester

Adam Minichino

Chris Herring and Kenny Tice never imagined they would have to be spokespeople.

But the former New Hope High School baseball player and NHHS parent believe it is time to speak out.

After remaining quiet throughout the season and watching momentum build against New Hope High baseball coach Stacy Hester, Herring and Tice said Saturday they believe people in the community are on a “personal vendetta” and “crusade” to remove Hester as the school’s coach.

“It’s a shame when coach Hester corrects an out-of-control parent during a game, and this parent makes it their personal mission to hold a personal crusade with a handful of other displeased parents and use family and co-worker influence on our elected school board members to reach their objectives,” Herring wrote in a prepared statement.

Herring and Tice said they plan to hold a meeting after church Wednesday night in the parking lot beside the New Hope High baseball field. They said all players (past an present), parents, friends, and supporters of Hester are encouraged to attend the meeting to help show the school board the community supports Hester.

“If enough people don’t come and stand behind coach Hester there is your answer,” Herring said. “I think the whole thing needs to be looked at. If you are going to investigate this man, investigate it right. If you push for change and think he needs to change, give him the guidelines he has got to change. Don’t take 18 years of his life — that baseball field is his life — and throw it down the drain. It is not right. Nobody can rationally say, you know what, he pushed a kid or he got on a parent, we’re going to get his job. What are you teaching your kids?”

Said Tice, “What is that going to come to if that starts happening at every school?”

Herring said the school board needs to stop relying on e-mails and phone calls from disgruntled people. He feels that is all the members of the school board have used to form their opinion.

When asked what the school board should do if the Hernando decision didn’t factor into the decision not to recommend Hester be retained, Herring said the members of the school board still should investigate Hester and do the process right. He also said the code of ethics for members of the school board needs to be re-examined to make sure those officials didn’t or don’t overstep their role and remain impartial.

Herring, who played baseball at New Hope High in 1992 and ’93, Hester’s first two seasons at the school, and Tice, whose son, Philip, is a junior second baseman on the team, then spent nearly the next hour voicing their concerns about the process apparently moving against Hester.

The Lowndes County School District Board appears ready to deliver a 5-0 vote that Hester not return as New Hope’s coach.

Hester said Lowndes County School District Superintendent Mike Halford told him he wouldn’t recommend he be retained based on the poll he took of the five members of the school board.

The school board could vote June 12 at its next scheduled meeting to determine Hester’s fate.

Herring said it is important for people to realize parents should not be allowed to control the team. He said he respects people will have different opinions, but he believes they shouldn’t vocalize those views and use them to try to sway public opinion. He said he and his brother kept their opinions to themselves all season, but they feel it is time to speak out.

“I don’t agree with how the deal went down with Philip, and if Stacy could change it he would snap his fingers and change it tomorrow,” Herring said. “He is a man. He made a mistake. He apologized. He was suspended for his mistake. That is enough embarrassment and enough punishment, but they still can’t let it go.”

Hester was not allowed to coach for the Pontotoc series in the Class 4A North Half playoffs after he was involved in an incident with Philip Tice in a game in the Hernando series.

Hester admitted to grabbing Tice to remove him from a possible altercation with a Hernando player that could have resulted in his team being disqualified from the playoffs. He moved Tice, who was ejected from the game, to the dugout where Kenny Tice said his son told him Hester was holding his arm. Kenny Tice said his son told him, and later wrote in a letter, that he stumbled on the top step of the dugout, causing them to fall into the dugout.

Kenny Tice said his son told him Hester had him against the wall and told him you can’t get into a confrontation because the team would be thrown out of the playoffs.

Tice said he didn’t know the day of the incident exactly what happened but he didn’t have a problem with what transpired after talking with his son and meeting the following week with New Hope High Principal Lynn Wright, assistant principal Matt Smith, Hester, athletic director Dale Hardin, and baseball team representative Debby Upton, who taped the meeting.

“I told coach Hester at the meeting that if I had thought you were hurting my son, there wouldn’t have been a fence or a dugout that could have held me back,” Tice said. “It wasn’t that big of a deal. The big deal is the deal before that. It kept dominoing.”

Tice said he never has spoken about the incident with the superintendent or any members of the school board. He said one school board official, who he declined to name, asked him to press charges against Hester for his role in what happened.

Tice believes Hester is in a no-win situation and that the veteran coach isn’t the only person who is being affected the longer this issue goes on.

“I told them at the meeting, ‘Coach Hester has had a gun pointed at him. The trigger is cocked, but (Philip) is not pulling the trigger on him,’ ” Tice said. “How would he feel if we went to Mississippi State, Delta State, or West Alabama and he was carrying (the feeling) that his (high school) coach got fired because of him? If everybody is so worried about the kids, they should see what they’re doing to the kids now. It just ain’t right.”

Tice and Herring said the push to remove Hester stems from an incident at a game at Houston earlier in the season. They said Hester told a woman, whose son plays on the New Hope team, to sit down and to keep her mouth shut.

That morning, New Hope had practiced a sign for a squeeze bunt play. At the game later that day, Hester gave one of his players the sign to squeeze bunt multiple times and he didn’t take it. The player then struck out with runners on second and third base. When the player walked toward the dugout, Tice said Hester flipped the player’s hat up and said, “That was stupid. We practiced all day.”

Tice said the woman, who he declined to identify, yelled from the stands and told Hester to keep his hands off the player. He said she continued to say things before Hester told her “sit down and keep your mouth shut.”

From that point, they believe people have been working against Hester behind the scenes. Herring said people have talked to his brother and said things, rumors have circulated, and parents have said they would move their children to other schools if something wasn’t done about Hester.

Tice said a school board member called him two times and asked him “How are you going to feel if Hester hurts one of those kids next year and you had a chance to get rid of him?”

He declined the name the school board official

Herring also said people in the community need to know all of the sacrifices Hester has made for kids and for his program. He said he has paid for clothing and travel expenses for less fortunate players who can’t afford it and allowed them to work off the expenses at a later date.

“He does it so those kids can stand right beside another kid and feel proud because they’re part of a team,” Herring said. “In the past 18 years there is no telling how many thousands of dollars he has paid for out of his pocket before the Diamond Club (the booster club). The kids and the mothers know it.”

Herring and Tice don’t know how the situat

My son is a former baseball player for Coach Hester, Class of 1999. He's presently serving in the Air Force in Germany. He said Dad if I could be there I would show support for Coach Hester. So I will be there to show support, in his place. Clay moved to Columbus in 1998, just before his senior year. Clay says Coach Hester was always fair, and he has nothing but respect fot his coach. I told Coach Hester after my son's one and only year that I appreciate everything he did for Clay, and all of the opportunities we had to enjoy some great New Hope baseball. I consider Coach Hester not only as my son's former coach but as a friend of the family. It is a shame that a coach that has had this many years of success, is a proven winner, and a leader in our community has to suffer through all of this drama. Please stand behind Coach Hester, folks. This is not tee ball--this is Mississippi competitive high school championship baseball. We should be proud to have a coach of this caliber in our community. On behalf of Clay Colvin, USAF, Ramstein, AFB, Germany, Doug and Sylvia Colvin, Columbus.

I am a 1995 graduate of new hope high school. I am now a phycisian living in Jackson MS. I visited home this weekend and was astonished to hear this news of coach stacey hester. I am speaking as a female but as a former fan and batgirl that never missed one game or practice for four years. I saw everything from the field to doug out to the locker room and I must say stacey hester is a fine coach. Looking back as a mature adult and a mom of two boys now, I can but only hope my two can have the chance to have a coach like him. To teach that hard work pays off. That your not given too freely. That your last name means nothing. That discipline is necessary and vital to molding these boys to be productive young mean. To know how to set goals and to know it's ok to reach for the sky and then believe you can achieve it. To keep them passionate about something that is healthy, wholesome and keeps them away from so many other things that bring no greater good and just plain harmful. That they learn to respect those above them and that they are wiser. As I read the accounts, though I was not there, my immediate thought is absolutely I would want my cold reprimanded for their poor decision on that moment. Just wanted to say that I so respect this man and mrs ann. It burdens my heart that they are having to undergo such scrutiny and pain but can I say " no greater is our sufferings compared to those Jesus Christ"

I am a 1997 graduate of NHHS and former player for Coach Stacey Hester. It saddens me to hear that this situation even exists. Every successful person I know has made a mistake in the heat of the moment when emotions are high. Say he is let go. Where do we go from here? If anyone thinks that there is better candidate to teach kids not only the game of baseball, but how to overcome adversity and sacrifice to achieve perfection, then they are mistaken. Everything this man stands for, exemplifies the traits it takes to be a success. He demanded that we put in countless volumes of effort, time, and hard work to achieve the goals that we set out to reach from the first day we set foot on that field. He excepted nothing less than excellence and if that is not what the people in this community want, then maybe he should go. My four years under him was as big a part of my transition from a boy to a man as any other influence in my life. I am a husband, a father, and have a wonderful career. If any of that can be viewed as a success then I owe a big part of it to him. You cannot be around baseball anywhere in the state of MS. for very long without seeing his influence. Whether it be former colleagues or players, his passion and drive has spread far and wide. I challenge everyone in this community to be pro-active in putting an end to this situation. I challenge the members of the board to look at the entire body of his career, consider the lives touched by him, and put their personal agendas aside and then make the right decision. It would truly be a great loss not only to the program but to the entire community if he is realeased.

I've coached against Coach Hester for the past 9 years and there have been many, many times when I've thought "he needs to calm down" but there has NEVER been a time when I thought he wasn't coaching his team to be the BEST that they could be. Stacey Hester is a baseball coach and a teacher. I'm sure he's done some things wrong but who hasn't? I'd let any of my kids play for Coach Hester.

I have known Coach Hester since his first year coaching at New Hope, my boyfriend at the time was on the team. Since that time I have had numerous occasions to see him on the field and off. I have found him to be a great family man and dedicated coach. The board will be making a huge mistake if Coach Hester is not allowed to continue as Head Baseball Coach.

I am a former batgirl from Caledonia. Caledonia and New Hope eat sleep and drink baseball.. there was never a game that our Coach was not passionate about the game. We always made it to north state and sometimes went on to state.. everyone on the team knew that it was serious stuff. We were proud of our dedication-that is how we got to that point. New Hope is like that also. Our coach was thrown out many times. The whole town knew the stakes were high at a game in Caledonia.. I feel it is between the player and the coach--if they are cool with it--then chalk it up to the moment and leave it alone. It is not worth this man's career.. I know Phillip and I believe him totally.. leave the poor kid and his family alone and leave the coach alone.. no one is perfect.. he sounds like a really dedicated man..

As a parent who regularly attends practice, I am certainly glad to see this man in the hot seat. He says some of the most derogatory things to 15-18 year olds during practice. There is no reason to constantly stay on a kid they way he does and his comments have nothing to do with baseball. He's usually ragging them, especially the ones who play other sports like football, about all the time they spend practicing football or lifting weights during football season. If the comments had something to do with the game of baseball itself, it probably would be ok but the mental abuse he puts kids through about other sports they play is unacceptable. The man needs to go NOW.

Article Comment Former Columbian commented at 5/26/2009 5:03:00 PM:

I have been reading the articles and speaking to several parents at New Hope about the situation with Coach Hester. I am shocked that so many people think it is okay for a coach to put his hands on a player. I was a batgirl for a 3 years running Lee High School state championship team. We had a coach that was very well respected throughtout the state and he was very demanding on the players but not one time in all the "fits" that he threw did I ever see him lay a hand on a player or yell at anyone in the stands. One of the best indicators of how great a coach you are is how controlled you are. This does not mean that I agree with what the parent involved in the Houston incident did but again, a great coach would have ignored that parent instead of yelling back at her. I have read about all the "bars" Coach Hester has raised for New Hope baseball but it seems he has forgotten to raise his own bar, for his temper. I am not criticizing him for yelling at the boys or demanding excellence from the boys, I know this shapes them into better people and I applaud him for that trait. I am criticizing how he handles himself at critical times. From what I understand, this is just one of several incidents with Coach Hester that have gone on over the years. I think the biggest question on my mind and the mind of a lot of other "outsiders" is, what happens if this goes away and the next kid is not so lucky to have "tripped" and ended up with a hand around his throat? What if the next kid is not okay?

Article Comment 1980 graduate of New Hope commented at 5/26/2009 11:58:00 PM:

All of these comments are well and good. Let me remind some of you that New Hope Baseball has always been a winning program. They didn't just start winning 18 yrs. ago. Yes, there have been a lot of improvements over the years and that is wonderful. But what are we teaching our kids if we are teaching them to lie about a situtation just to not be the one to get a coach fired as was stated by Mr. Tice. How many of the seniors this year graduated with honors. We have gotten away from teaching academics and all we are worried about is sports and winning. If this team had a losing record or if the win numbers were reversed would there be this much talk about it???? Also, don't put the blame on the doctors wife as some you want to put it. Put the blame on the incident at hand and not her. She just had the courage to finally say something and now she is taking the brunt of all of this. Thats why we are in this situation today. To many people have been afraid to speak out. Over the past 18yrs. this is not the first incident that has happened. Some don't want to remember years past. And last but not least get off the doctors wife!!!!!

It is apparent to me that most of the people in Columbus are crazy. The pettiness and bitterness that pervades that community is unreal. Coaches say mean things in practice. It's part of dealing with teenagers who are often hard headed. This is big time high school baseball. Go play church league softball or something. The number one reason there are so many immature kids in Columbus is because they are raised by parents who haven't grown up.

This woman that started this whole mess has got the WORST mouth of ANY woman I have ever heard. She wants to act like a fool and get all upset over Coach Hester saying STUPID. I have heard it all. I would love to know WHY you moved to New Hope to begin with. BASEBALL I'm sure was the main reason. Go back to where you came from if you aren't happy with your son's playing time or the way he is being coached. Evidently you heard good things about Coach Hester and his team. If you don't like it now,good..get out of here. Let that kid of yours grow up, without mommy controlling his ever move. And DR. BUCKLEY YOU should not be voting at this board meeting. Where are the comments or the case being made by the people, parents, or even players against the return of the coach? To steal a baseball phrase it's Bush League Journalism but not bad journalism on the author's part. The story is present in a well-informed albeit bias fashion.

New Hope won games before Hester got here. If you look at the players he has had....they have always been good at the game. He hasn't done anything special. And I don't think it's coincidence that New Hope hasn't won like it used to. They had some good assistants who did the "real" coaching when they won state championships.

Article Comment GC commented at 5/27/2009 8:43:00 PM:

He has done more with less than most other successful coaches. He has only had 1 or 2 D1 players to come through his program. It is not like New Hope has been full of "college baseball studs" like West Lauderdale or Oak Grove. So in my opinion he has been very successful with the talent he has been given.

Article Comment Sam I Am commented at 5/27/2009 8:46:00 PM:

That's because he feels it isn't his job to help his players get looked at by colleges. He doesn't care about the kids....only himself. You just made a great point. He looks like a great coach with no D1 players....but he actually does his best to keep it that way.

Article Comment GC commented at 5/27/2009 9:27:00 PM:

Yea it is his fault that the kids do not make it to D1 colleges. You just proved a point about how most New Hope parents think. It sure is not my child's fault he did not make it college, I will just shift the blame to the COACH (what a joke).

Shelton, Bazzell, Hunter, and a few others are the few "studs" that have come through New Hope.

Take a look around Columbus and compare the size of the athletes to say W. Lauderdale or Oak Grove. You just cant compare them.

Article Comment Sam I Am commented at 5/27/2009 9:32:00 PM:

It's not shifting the blame. It's facts. Besides, just because you do not play D1 doesn't mean you're not a great player. Face it...he's had great players and assistants. He's not a great coach.

Article Comment GC commented at 5/27/2009 9:47:00 PM:

If it is not shifting blame then what is it? I agree he has had good assistants but none of them are having much success.

Article Comment Sam I Am commented at 5/27/2009 9:55:00 PM:

I think Tim Dowdy had success. He beat Hester in the playoffs and then won a state championship. I think Chism has done well considering the time he has been there. Everyone know Kent Farris is a great coach. So I don't see your point there. I admit New Hope has had success. The kids in the program have always been good.

Article Comment GC commented at 5/27/2009 10:02:00 PM:

I agree. I was just saying that many of the assistants have not had tremendous success. Dowdy has and I think Chism will if he stays in coaching. My point was that New Hope has never had outstanding talent (except a couple of years) compared to other "baseball schools." I have never had a child play at New Hope but Hester has always got a lot out of the players he had.

A lot of folks were there just to see what everyone was going to say. Its pretty childish when teachers come and bring their signs!!!! Come on people thats for kids.

There are consequences to actions. You can't just apologize and sweep things under the rug. He can't apologize for everything he has done. Time for change. Like I said earlier, you reap what you sow.

1980 graduate? Are you sure you don't mean 2009 graduate. Your continued idiocy is getting laughable. The deal is you are a typical detractor that has to counter everything somebody else says because you have a personal axe to grind with the man.

The 200 people there were teachers?
Ignorant!!! When did New Hope hire so many teachers? That education must be unbelievable!!

Hester was harder on Shane Bazzell and Jeff Hunter than he has been on probably any other players through the years. But both spoke on his behalf tonight along with countless others.

You are just a normal loud mouth detractor that has to yell at the top of your lungs about something but when it comes down to an civilized debate you have no answers (except for the regurgitated stories or excuses that everyone has heard before)

to 1980 and sam i am (dr.seuss idiot) why is it that the bashers are afraid to put your real names on these rediculous blogs. Are you scared you will get your asses kicked . yall are just a bunch of spineless jealous wimps with a personal vendetta against coach hester. Thats all its really about. It doesn't matter if there was 200 or 2000 people there tonite there was a lot of support for the man. most of yall dont even know the man personally. You just jump on the haters bandwagon because you may be friends with the Buckleys or someone who had an altercation with him in the past. In 18 years and 700 or 800 games he has coached hes had a handful of confrontations with disgruntled parents , BIG FREAKIN DEAL , what successful coach hasn't. So come on all you whiners with personal agendas against him , leave the man alone and let him do his job.

Article Comment Sam I Am commented at 5/28/2009 1:49:00 AM:

And so I take it that YOUR REAL name is amused? Wow! I am amused. I know more than you think. I do know a lot of coaches who have coached longer than that who have not been fired (as Hester has) and have not been suspended more than once (as Hester has) and win more games than him in a classy fashion. I can't believe he said he coaches the kids to be classy. Why doesn't he try leading by example?

Article Comment Marshal Fowler commented at 5/28/2009 2:34:00 AM:

I have a comment for the "2" colorfull characters: Sam I Am and 1980....Coach Hester seems like a wonderfull man, great father, loving husband, and a fantastic coach. He made a mistake, he apologized for it, the kid and his family forgive him. Mr. Halford even made the statement that the Hernando incident was not the reason he is not being asked to come back. So what is so wrong with saying hey Coach, you have one year to clean the stuff up, we will watch your every move, if you screw up, You are the one to blame and your'e gone. As far as I know, he has never been written up. I know at my office, if I screw up, I get a letter in my file, if I get another complaint I get my final warning. If I screw up again, guess what, I'm Jobless. I was at the meeting tonight. No I don't have a kid who attends NH or have I ever had a kid who went to school there. I just wanted to see this in person to make my own opinion of the man and believe it or not, I was quite impressed. The way the fans/parents talked about him, especially the former players who stood and said their piece about him. Judging by the former players words, this man has made quite an impression on these young mens lives. I see other comments from former parents and players on here and just think this man can't be the Monster everyone is making him out to being. Even the letters that are coming out in the newspaper from former players. This man is highly respected by alot of people. He is disliked by some as well but I think the majority on this site, really do respect the man. Lets give him credit where credit is due. One more year to clean it up or else. May God Bless you all!

This situation is exactly like the ones where a woman is abused by her husband but goes back for more. She turns stupid and continues to get beat up and keeps going back.

That is what you rabid followers are doing. Keep going back.

One question for you all. How many times have you cursed a child? Maybe thats common in New Hope Mississippi, but not where I live.

Keep going back. We aint extending a contract at Heritage.

Mrs Fowler. It's people like you who take up for him...people who know nothing. Of course you were impressed last night. They guy is about to get canned. He's doing whatever it takes to change people's minds. There are many, many former players who can't stand the guy.

Article Comment Jim Shore commented at 5/28/2009 5:31:00 PM:

Everyone, I am truly an outsider that stumbled on to this by accident. I have not lived here very long and have no opinion of the coach or the lowndes county school system. It seems that most supporters seem to be posting their names. Those against the defendant are anonymous. How can anyone be sure if this isn't just a few people posing as many. Also, its seems out of place that the people posting these strong comments about how he should be fired are making the same mistakes with their finger pointing and profanity that they want him fired for. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. One mistake I think everyone is making is the repeated use of the term kids. My daughter was killed by a 17 year MAN that was driving under the influence. While most of the "kids" are indeed kids when they enter as freshman or junior high. (Im not sure when they start). Once they reach the age of 16 and take on the responsibility of driving an automobile, they are YOUNG MEN. When you are behind the wheel of a machine that can kill someone if not directed properly you must have a certain amount of responsibility within yourself. It seems as if the coach is requiring that of his players based on the comments that I have read from former players. The world has always but now more than ever requires mental toughness. Stern coaching even with a minimal amount of foul language is more than likely beneficial. Just a thought.

Article Comment Sam I Am commented at 5/28/2009 6:59:00 PM:

Nobody cares if Hester uses profanity, or if he is a hard-noser, or works hard. The difference between him and GOOD coaches is that he doesn't care for the kids. It's all about him. Always has been and will continue until he gets out of here.

If I didn't know any better, I would think this is Varsity Blues & Hester was Bud Kilmer.

It's funny 'cause I hear all this talk about New Hope Baseball & the state titles, but I don't hear anything about New Hope Players going on to D1 Schools or playing in the minors or professionally.

A coach's job is to develop and enhance his player's talents as well as build the team & a winning concept. The fact that New Hope to be such a perrienial power and to be as close to MSU as it is & not to have players on it's staff or other schools says a lot about Coach Hester.

Love him all you want, you'll probably be better off w/o him.

Article Comment Matt Flanagan commented at 5/29/2009 3:35:00 PM:

sounds like the parents wanting him to be gone are the ones who let their kids grow up to be little wieners who still suck their thumbs at the age of 25. why don't you stop whining about your boy getting a little discipline? over-protective parents are the most annoying people in the entire world. especially ones who yell at the coach from the stands during a game. I hope you people enjoying having a terrible baseball team after you make hester leave. he should be allowed to take all of the trophies with him. yall don't deserve to keep them.

This story reminds me of Coach Knight...cannot question his success (one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history)...what happened to him at Indiana...sooner or later you run out of "get out of jail free cards". It's too big of a risk to keep him. Liability factor will win out everytime!

I have just stumbled on this situation over that last week and will not try to pretend to know all the facts. I have this observation to make:
Yes, Coach Hester has continued the fine baseball tradition @ NHS, but I believe that the initial architect of the program's rise was Coach Tommy Upton in the 1980's and I just want that to be noted.

Hope everything works out for the best interest of the school and program.

stacy is getting a raw deal if you are going to coach kids how to play baseball decipline starts when they are in coach pitch with every level the kid moves up it requires more decipline.when a kid or parent gets to where he can tell a coach how to run his program it's time for tht parent and kid to go home and never return to the ballpark coach hester you have my full support i think we should look at the school board and see if we need to replace them. if this is all they have to do they must be neglecting their jobs i wouldn't want any of them to a role model for any of my kids
