Anglers, like any sports enthusiasts, like to try new things.
In our area, it’s a challenge to find businesses that offer a huge selection of lures and fishing equipment.
The old Country Village, previously owned by Harvey Langford, is under a new ownership, Mitch Snider. Snider’s Country Village has seen many improvements since Mitch bought the business. The showroom has probably doubled in size, and the new addition has given anglers the floor space to have crappie and pan fish lures in their own areas. The bass fishing lures and equipment are separate, and Mitch has expanded the inventory in each area.
There have been many new lures introduced this year, and Snider’s Country Village carries quite a few of the additions to the market. He has been open-minded with the fishermen and is ordering lures that hadn’t been available in our area.
Many anglers are enjoying the changes and additions to the bait shop, and we can only expect it to get better as the fishing season arrives.
Also at Snider’s Country Village, Rat Housey is available for repairs and service on fishing reels. Most anglers don’t do preventative maintenance on their reels. They should be cleaned at least once a year. Reels owned by tournament anglers should be cleaned more than that because grit and dirt are detrimental to its moving parts.
The level wind system on reels probably is the first part on a reel that needs cleaning. The pawl follows a groove allowing the line to lay level on the spool. When grit and dirt accumulate on the front of the reel, the pawl will begin to wear. The pawl, in most cases, is hidden beneath the eye of the reel, and if you turn the reel over, you will the groove that the pawl follows.
This level wind system causes the majority of the problems with that “tight” feeling you get when trying to reel line back on the spool. This could be a simple cleaning problem or a pawl problem.
Some anglers try to clean their reels on their own. If the parts aren’t laid out, cleaned, and replaced in the order they were taken off, it’s unlikely you will have the same reel you started with.
Rat Housey has been servicing reels for many years. If you have a reel that doesn’t sound right or feel right, give Rat a call at the bait shop.
For those of you who haven’t visited Snider’s Country Village, it’s easy to find. Travel east on Highway 182 E and it is on the right just before the state line. You can call them at 662-327-9106
