SENATOBIA — The Magnolia Heights football team stopped Parker Dunaway on a conversion run with 2 minutes, 58 seconds left in the game Friday to preserve a 14-13 victory against Heritage Academy in a Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class AAA, Division II, District 1 victory.
The victory put the Chiefs (6-1, 3-0 district) in the driver’s seat for the playoffs, while the Patriots slipped to 2-4 and 1-2.
After failing to convert on a fourth-and-9 on the Magnolia Heights 18, Heritage Academy allowed one first down before the defense forced Magnolia Heights to attempt a punt. But the snap went over the head of punter Travis Beam, who tried to kick the ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety. Instead, the ball tumbled into the end zone, where Hudson Bean recovered.
Heritage Academy coach Barrett Donahoe opted to go for the two-point conversion trailing 14-13 with 2 minutes, 58 seconds to play and no timeouts. Dunaway took the snap and rolled left in an attempt to get the to far corner, but he was stopped at least 1 yard shy of the end zone.
