The New Hope High School baseball and fast-pitch softball teams kicked off their postseason in abbreviated fashion Thursday.
The baseball team used a strong pitching effort from J.C. Redden to earn a 12-2 victory against Lake Cormorant in six innings in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A North State playoffs. The softball team used a one-hit pitching performance by Lauren Holifield and a balanced hitting attack to beat Oxford 13-0 in five innings in the Class 5A North State tournament.
Redden struck out four and walked four to help the Trojans improve to 18-7. Taylor Stafford recorded the final two outs.
Will Golsan had two singles and a double, Landon Boyd had a double, Stafford had a single, Tee Payne had two doubles and a single, Payton Lane, Austin Oswalt and Redden added singles.
Holifield walked one and struck out eight. She also was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Kasey Stanfield was 1-for-4 with a sacrifice and an RBI, R.J. James had an RBI, Taylor Blevins had a sacrifice and an RBI, D.J. Sanders was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Kaitlin Oswalt had a double and a triple, Erin Stanfield had two doubles, a sacrifice, and an RBI, Kaitlin Bradley had a single and an RBI, and Ashley Reed had an RBI.
n Heritage Academy baseball team loses to Washington School: At Greenville, the Heritage Academy baseball team lost a doubleheader to Washington School 5-4 and 7-0 Thursday. The losses eliminated Heritage Academy (15-9) from playoff contention. The Patriots needed to win one of the two games to advance to face Starkville Academy next week.
In game one, Heritage Academy scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead, but Washington School scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game. Jace Caldwell allowed six hits and five runs (two earned) in 6 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out three. Parker Dunaway was 1-for-3 with a run scored, James Clark was 2-for-3, M.J. Hamrick was 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Mark Thatcher and Clark Atkins had RBIs.
In game two, Tyler Weeks scattered six hits, walked one, and struck out 10 to get the victory. Cody Mordecai was 1-for-4, Dunaway was 2-for-4, and Hamrick, Thatcher, and Hunter Sykes had hits for Heritage Academy.
Clark allowed four hits and seven runs (six earned) in five innings. He walked four and struck out four. Hamrick struck out one in one inning.
n Pickens Academy baseball team loses to Coosa Valley: At Carrollton, Ala., Pickens Academy (10-7) lost to Coosa Valley 7-0 and 8-0 in the Alabama Independent School Association playoffs.
In game one, Daniel Cameron (5-2) took the loss. He allowed seven hits in four innings. Joel Pratt had the team's only hit.
In game two, Pratt (2-2) took the loss. He allowed 12 hits and one walk. He struck out six. Josh Lewis had two singles and Hunter Booth had a single.
