East Webster beats rival West Oktibbeha

Danny P Smith

MABEN --┬áThe East Webster High School girls basketball team knew it would be difficult to beat the West Oktibbeha Lady Timberwolves three times in one season.

That''s what it took Thursday night for No. 2 seed East Webster to make the championship game of the Class A, Region 5 Tournament.

The Lady Wolverines took a 23-20 halftime lead and never lost it in a 46-42 victory at Sammy Henderson Gymnasium.

"We''ve been fortunate to have beaten them all three times, but their coach does an excellent job with them," East Webster coach Bill Brand said.

Alexandria Morgan scored all 12 of East Webster''s points in the third quarter, but the Lady Wolverines only led 35-34 at the end of the quarter.

East Webster jumped out 45-38 with 2 minutes, 16 seconds left in the game on three baskets by Iyeshia Thomas and held on for the win.

"I thought we played well for 31 minutes, but that last minute we thought the game was over and we let them back in it," Brand said. "Other than that, I''m very proud and happy to have earned a home playoff game in the South Half playoffs."

Morgan scored 21 points and Thomas added 15 for the Lady Wolverines, who will face top-seeded Weir at 7 tonight.

Andrea Brown and Shamia Robinson had 13 points apiece for West Oktibbeha.

Coach Shelia Young chalked up the loss to having a bad case of nerves.

"I think our girls were a little nervous coming into the game," Young said. "We''ll need to come back and play our hearts out."

The Lady Timberwolves (11-13) play East Oktibbeha at 4 p.m. in today''s consolation game.

n Weir 53, East Oktibbeha 24: The Weir Lady Lions showed why they are the No. 1 seed in the tournament with a dominating victory.

East Oktibbeha (9-15) was 1 of 13 from 3-point range.

"We played hard, but Weir had a good team and they are a well-coached team," East Oktibbeha coach Cynthia Davenport said. "We fought hard, but when we would try to penetrate the lane, we were well defended, and it was hard on us."

Cierra Ferguson had 11 points, while Olivia Moody had 10 rebounds for the Lady Titans.

Andrea Carter scored 22 points to lead Weir (27-8).
