CALEDONIA -- The Aberdeen High School volleyball team won the MHSAA Class 1, Division 1 Tournament on Saturday by sweeping Caledonia in straight sets.
Aberdeen won the first set 25-20 and the second 25-15 to claim the division championship.
"It was real big for our seniors," Aberdeen coach Marquis Burnett said. "We wanted to go out as division champs. Seven of our varsity players are seniors. It was real exciting."
The victory will allow Aberdeen (21-3) will get to host a match in the first round of the state playoffs Saturday. The opponent has yet to be determined.
Aberdeen didn''t have a Senior Night during the regular season and will honor its seniors Saturday.
"It pretty much gave them an incentive," Burnett said. "We were going to have Senior Night on Tuesday, but we had to cancel that game. I told the girls if they wanted a Senior Night at home we had to win the division tournament to have a home game and that way we could honor them. They came ready to play and they had an incentive."
. The Caledonia Lady Confederates were disappointed they weren''t able to win the division championship on their home court.
"Aberdeen is our big competitor and of course we wanted to beat them," Caledonia coach Samantha Brooks said. "We did play well in the first game and just didn''t pull it out.
"After the second game it was disappointing because we wanted to be No. 1 in the district. That was our goal."

How many state championships has Caledonia had in volleyball since they dropped softball in the Fall. I guess getting pounded over and over by the State Champs just left a sour taste every year when it was all over and the other team had another big gold trophy on the shelf. When a school like Aberdeen beats you in volleyball, you really need to consider dropping the sport cause you are pitiful.
