CALEDONIA — The Aberdeen High School volleyball team won the MHSAA Class 1, Division 1 Tournament on Saturday by sweeping Caledonia in straight sets.
Aberdeen won the first set 25-20 and the second 25-15 to claim the division championship.
“It was real big for our seniors,” Aberdeen coach Marquis Burnett said. “We wanted to go out as division champs. Seven of our varsity players are seniors. It was real exciting.”
The victory will allow Aberdeen (21-3) will get to host a match in the first round of the state playoffs Saturday. The opponent has yet to be determined.
Aberdeen didn”t have a Senior Night during the regular season and will honor its seniors Saturday.
“It pretty much gave them an incentive,” Burnett said. “We were going to have Senior Night on Tuesday, but we had to cancel that game. I told the girls if they wanted a Senior Night at home we had to win the division tournament to have a home game and that way we could honor them. They came ready to play and they had an incentive.”
. The Caledonia Lady Confederates were disappointed they weren”t able to win the division championship on their home court.
“Aberdeen is our big competitor and of course we wanted to beat them,” Caledonia coach Samantha Brooks said. “We did play well in the first game and just didn”t pull it out.
“After the second game it was disappointing because we wanted to be No. 1 in the district. That was our goal.”
Aberdeen advanced to the championship match by beating Corinth 2-0 (25-9, 25-11).
Caledonia made it to the championship match by beating West Lowndes 2-0 (25-12, 26-24).
Kara VonKanel had an ace and seven kills, Shaina Cruse had five aces, Blaire Ruth had three kills, Ashley Dodson had two kills, Sunnie Rushing had an ace and kill, Whitney Pounders had an ace, and Macy Hicks had a kill for Caledonia against West Lowndes.
Corinth advanced to play Aberdeen by beating Ripley in the first match of the tournament. The scores were 25-22, 21-25, 15-7.

n Tournaments postponed: The Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class A North State Tournament at Bayou Academy in Cleveland and Class AA North State Tournament at North Delta School in Batesville were postponed Saturday and will be played Tuesday.
In the Class A North State Tournament, Central Academy is scheduled to play Tri-County Academy at 10:30 a.m. and Hebron Christian is scheduled to play Benton Academy at 10:30 a.m.
In the Class AA North State Tournament, Oak Hill Academy is scheduled to play Indianola Academy at 9 a.m.
The Class AAA North State Tournament will be played Monday starting at 10 a.m. at the Starkville Sportsplex.
